Answer 3

  • How can a therapist best aid clients in overcoming actions and behaviors that led them to counseling?
  • A therapist can best aid their clients in overcoming actions and behaviors that led them to counseling by hosting a group therapy session.
  • Details
    • Group members will usually be going through the same situation as the client, helping them realize they are not alone. For example, a client who is going through depression, listens to one of the group members talk about his lack of focus and "emptiness", knowing what they are going through. This will lead the client to talk more about their condition, and come to terms with a goal.
    • Group therapy is very supportive. Group leaders are trained to help the group develop an environment of safety and respect. For example, a client might not say anything during one-on-one therapy because they feel uncomfortable. However, after going to a group therapy session, they might feel wanted and safe, and will start to open up.
    • Group therapy also helps the client see their problems in a different way. For example, they might bring up a fight they got into that week, and why they got upset. However, someone else in the group will look at the problem in a different way, opening the client's eyes to a different solution and/or how they could have handled it better.

  • Group Therapy is a solution that works for many clients because they realize they are not alone and become comfortable enough to open up to others.

EQ

1. I have reviewed the rule of three for writing an essential question.

2.

  • a. "What is the most important factor in healthy weight loss?" meets the rule of three. The wording of the question makes sense. It allows you to argue one of the many ways that you can lose weight. You need research to answer the question.
  • b. "What is most important in securing a conviction in a criminal investigation?" requires deep research and opinions to answer. The format of the question also makes sense, following the rule of three.
  • c. "What is most important in creating a hairstyle that best satisfies a customer?" also needs research to be answered. The format makes sense.
  • d. "How can an anesthesiologist best treat chronic pain?" does not follow the rule of three because this can be answered in a list.
3. What is the best way a therapist or counselor can leave a family "whole and hopeful" through multiple weeks of sessions?

Blog 8: Research and Working EQ

1. What is your working EQ?
A: What types of actions or behaviors lead families and their children to go to therapy?

2. What is a possible answer to your working EQ?

  • A breakdown in communication between family members can lead to emotional withdrawl from family life.
  • Violent behavior in children or adolescents towards themselves or others may arise to conflict within themselves.

3. What is the most important source you have used that has helped you come up with your answer to your working EQ?
A: Two of the main sources that have helped me the most are:

  • Parker, Wayne. "When Do I Need A Family Counselor: Finding and Choosing A Family Therapist." Web. 21 Aug 2014.
  • UCD Student Advisors. "Family Problems." Web. 9 Oct 2014.

4. Where is your mentorship, and how does what you are doing relate to your working EQ?
A: My mentorship is at Wescove Daycare in West Covina. It relates to my working EQ because I work with different children and observe the way they react to their peers and their families. I also work with my mentor, Vivian Alvarez, and in our sessions, she explains family dynamics and child development.
