Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Approval

1. Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.

A: I plan to volunteer at Wescove Daycare in West Covina. My mentor will be Rita. I will be starting next week. I will work with 3 or 4 different children and spend time with them, getting to know them. I plan to talk to them using therapeutic techniques, that will help the kids feel more comfortable not only with me, but also with themselves. I also plan to compare the children I am keeping my eye on, and observe their family background, and take notes on how their daily life will affect their path and their future. In addition, I plan to work with the staff, and getting their input on how to work with children. Second, at the reccomendation of my initial mentor, Vivian Alvarez, I am going to attend therapy session(s). Since we are very comfortable with each other, she suggested she could be my counselor. I also plan to keep in touch with a family therapist, ScottieRae Stevens, who will help me throughout my senior project.

2. Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.

  • I plan to keep a daily journal on Google Docs (the link will be on my blog) that will show the date I went to my mentorship at Wescove Daycare. I will have a graph made with the child's name, their behavior that day, how I helped them that day, and how I can continue to help them in the future.
  • By attending therapy sessions with Vivian. After each session, I will talk to her about how I can improve on a daily basis. I also plan to ask and observe about tips on counseling.

3. Explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.

A: Working at the daycare will help me in my research of child development. I will learn how to work with kids and how I can help them feel more comfortable around me. As a counselor, you will have to learn how to help people feel comfortable in order for them to open to you. In my sessions with Vivian, this will help me because I will be the eye of the client, and I will be open to what they usually feel during a session.

4. Update your Senior Project Hours log.

There is a link on my blog under Senior Project Hours that will be updated when I go to mentorship.

  1. Ok...if you want this to work, you'll just need to explain the connections in your logs. Please take id verification off of your comments.
